In Varaždin held an international conference on the occasion of the great jubilee – the 40th anniversary of the Alps Adriatic Alliance
On Tuesday, November 20th Varaždin County, as chairing of the Alps Adriatic Alliance, hosted an international conference on the occasion of the great jubilee celebration – the 40th anniversary of the Alps Adriatic Alliance and the cooperation of countries and regions int he area of Central Europe. The conference was held in the framework of the European week of regions and cities, which is a key event of European union’s regional policy, and among the leaders from ten regions from Austria, Hungary and Croatia, the County was represented by the deputy prefect Ratimir Ljubić.
At the conference was presented an overview of so far achievements of the Alps Adriatic Alliance during the 40 years of operation, and the leaders of the region also discussed the further development of the Alliance’s development, which was established in 1978. under the name of the Alps Adriatic Working Community. In this way, the presidents of regional governments then transformed their informal historical and friendly ties into an international organization, and on November 20th, 40 years ago, was signed an agreement on the cooperation of the regions and countries that cover the area of Alps and the Adriatic. The Alps Adriatic Working Community has been transformed into the Alliance in 2013., after all member states of the working community became members of the European Union, and today members of the Alliance are from the regions of Austria, Slovenia, Hungary and Croatia.
State secretary for european affairs at the Ministry of foreign and european affairs of the Republic of Croatia, Andreja Metelko-Zgombić, discussed the long-lasting successful cooperation of the Ministry with the Working Community, which was of great importance for Croatia. A lecture on the legal aspect of interregional organizations in Europe was held at the conference by prof. dr. sc. Vedran Đulabić from the Faculty of law in Zagreb, and examples of implemented good practice projects by members of the Alliance were presented.
Secretary general of the Alliance Thomas Pseiner presented the section of work of the Alliance for the past four decades and pointed out that this interregional organization has crossed the borders of the various divisions in time before we had European cohesion instruments. At the conference was also presented the “Strategy of the Alps Adriatic geographic area” and was finally held discussion by the representatives of the Alliance members on the guidelines for future development.
